Artist: Michael Shapcott [portrait]
Ignore the slightly bizarre start! This is a really good demonstration on how to layer using washes of paint.

Excellent diary tutorials
Annoyingly I can't add these to this blog but if you enter suziblutube into YouTube you will find a whole load of tutorials to give you ideas for your diary. I particularly like her self-portrait page. Layers is also a good one.
Another example of an art diary
The imagery used in this diary is a bit cute and girly but it is an excellent example of how to layer or 'mess up' the page first.

Artist: Ron Mueck
Australian born artist Ron Mueck lives and works in Britain. The incredible attention to detail in his sculptures make them compelling. He plays with scale so that these otherwise realistic sculptures are a little disturbing to look at.

How to Make Your Very Own Hard Cover Journal
Part 1 of 5
This takes ages and is fiddly but one or two of you may want to have a go.
Art Journal Workshop: Bookbinding
I've shown some of you how to make a simple hard-backed diary. This video is a reminder of how to glue the covers. The application of glue is different from the what we did in class - experiment!

Frida Kahlo [an interesting interpretation of her life]
NOT historically accurate but quite funny. I like the scene in the bathroom where she's shaving her moustache!

Workshop: How to draw a pointing hand
You'll see the artist use a blunting stump to smudge the pencil and soften the shading. A blunting stump is made from paper tightly rolled and can be sharpened. A cotton bud will do the same job.

How many different coloured pastels were used in this drawing?

Observational drawing: hand
When applying tone I used curved pencil lines to make the hand look rounded. Straight lines make an object look flat.

Artist: Francis Bacon
Walking into an artist's studio is like 'walking into the artist's head'
This video clip, advertising an exhibition held in Dublin last year, shows the studio of Francis Bacon, one of Britain's most popular and successful modern painters.
Look at the way he crumpled and tore photos to inspire his paintings.

News: Ai Weiwei's Sunflower seeds at the Tate
This installation by Ai Weiwei is the latest in the Unilever series at The Tate Modern. A team of 1600 people in China produced 100 million of these sunflower seeds using porcelain and painting them by hand.
It was intended that the work should be interactive, with visitors free to walk on the porcelain seeds. Unfortunately the dust from the seeds proved to be a health and safety hazard so now the work can only be viewed and not touched.
The installation will remain at the Tate until 2nd May 2011

Ideas: Soap sculptures
An easy and inexpensive way to make small scale sculpture at home.
You will need:
1. A bar of soap
2. A sharp point [like a needle or compass] to lightly scratch on your design
3. A teaspoon to scrape away large areas of soap
4. A small flat screwdriver to scrape away smaller areas of soap. [A metal nail file could also be used here - improvise!]
As soap is soft you do not need to use knives or other potentially dangerous equipment.
